Shophouses are known for their unique architectural styles, which have changed across six different periods:

  • The Early Shophouse style (1840s-1900s): The earliest style of shophouses were only the essentials with minimal ornaments and decorations.

  • The First Transitional Shophouse style (early 1900s): Decorative plasterwork and colorful tiles to the facades of the shophouses brought radiant looks to the city’s streets.

  • The Late Shophouse style (1900-1940): This shophouses style was very stylish and adorned with brightly-colored ceramic tiles and plaster bouquets, festoons, plaques, and other ornaments.

  • The Second Transitional Shophouse style (late 1930s): Subdued and muted designs made the end products simple and streamlined.

  • The Art Deco Shophouse Style (1930-1960): Classical motifs were streamlined such as the column orders, arches, keystones and pediments into geometric designs.

  • The Modern Shophouse Style (1950-1960): The designs were geared towards functionalism to fulfill the needs for modern facilities for the middle-class.

Beyond their architectural beauty, shophouses tell the story of Singapore’s cultural melting pot. Many were owned and operated by Chinese, Malay, and Indian merchants, selling everything from textiles to traditional medicine.

Today, many historic shophouses have been restored and repurposed as trendy cafés, boutique hotels, and offices, preserving their heritage while giving them a new purpose in life.
